During our journey to the Dutch Indies I had no cleaning or other duties what so ever, and that was because I did not belong to any of the Divisions on board. Although I was one of a few volunteers on board I had no intention to volunteer for the work details on board. Nobody liked those chores so why should I put my hand up. That was asking too much. There were 1400 soldiers on board the Indrapoera and most of them were conscripts or enlisted men.
I found sleeping difficult as we were suspended over the dining table in hammocks. Those hammocks were a curse as you had the constant fear of falling out of them. This was a regular occurrence to the great delight of your buddies. (photo Indrapoera)
